Mossman Swimming Club

The headquarters of the Mossman Meteors Swimming Club is the Mossman Bicentennial Pool situated at Park Street, Mossman.

Mossman is situated approximately 75 kilometres North of Cairns at the foot of Mt. Demi and is primarily a sugar cane growing area and, together with Port Douglas, the Daintree National Park and the Great Barrier Reef at our doorstep, is the destination of visitors from throughout Australia and overseas countries.

In the 1920’s and 30’s swimming lessons and races in the Mossman area were held in the ‘Dark Pool’ which was part of the Mossman River. The Mossman Meteors Club was established in 1987 and had its headquarters at the Mossman Squash Courts where a small pool was used by Meteor Members and learn to swim classes. In 1988, after the building of the Mossman Bicentennial Pool , the Mossman Meteors moved their headquarters to this Pool.

The Mossman Pool is a modern facility and is the only eight (8) lane Olympic Size Pool outside of the Cairns City area. Two thirds of the Pool area is covered with a retractable shade cloth for the comfort and protection of swimmers from the sun.

The Club size has waxed and waned over the years but has been relatively steady for the last five years. Over recent season the Club has had swimmers selected for the QSA Development Squad; the FNQ Achievers’ Squad; the FNQ Target Squad and most 11 swimmers for the Swimming Queensland Junior Excellence (JX) Squad.

In past seasons the Club has had swimmers compete at the Australian Age Championships and earned medals at this level. As well, one of our swimmers moved to Brisbane to the Redcliffe Lawnton Club and trained with Ken Wood before retiring from competitive swimming to become one of our Club Coaches.

The Club has a steady core of swimmers and many developing young swimmers who are very keen and training regularly. There is also a core of keen parents/committee members.
